Historic Games: Cosmos win 6-2

By: Stephen Brandt

October 10, 1981 – In a match against Valur FC in Reykjavic Iceland, Giorgio Chingalla scored three goals, Vladislav Bogicevic scored two, and Julio Cesar Romero got the last one as the Cosmos went to 1-1-1 on their tour. Romero had three assists to go with his goal. They played before a crowd of 10,500 and in 30 degree weather with 20 mph winds.

As with anything I write for the Borough Boys, if you have anything to add, please feel free to add anything to heighten the knowledge of the game. The more we talk about the Cosmos the more the world will know, and the more the club will be brought into the next century.

Beckham and family to move to NYC?

According to this story, Posh is considering the move to further her fashion business. This bit of news should stir up a lot of Beckham to be involved with the Cosmos rumors, especially being his best friend Terry Byrne is on the Board of Directors.

Would you like to see Beckham involved in some capacity?

Where We Stand

Being on the cusp of a new year and a full schedule of “festive period” premiership games, got us thinking about where we stand in the final weeks of 2010.

After a meeting early in the year, The Borough Boys jumped on board with the new ownership group of the New York Cosmos. They shared with us a business plan and time-line for 2010 and everything in that plan came to fruition.

From Pele standing in a
Queens park announcing a return of the New York Cosmos to MLS Commissioner Don Garber saying how he is impressed with the Cosmos, there is, we believe, for the first time since Fred Wilpon talked about MLS in 2007 new reason for optimism for a New York City based soccer club.

Some famous Cosmos

By: Stephen Brandt

It’s a shame that there isn’t a database of good Cosmos History, and as you’re Cosmos Historian, I’m attempting to do that for future generations. However, being the first to compile something for the club is very hard. Sometimes I wish that the Club had a database they could share, so younger  fans could live the love of the club. Sadly I don’t think that’s true, but that’s life. From Wikipedia here’s my contribution for the week.

Cosmos vs. Santos in June?

We have heard the New York Cosmos talk about holding "inspirational" games and they have even mentioned some potential dates. While nothing is confirmed; sources are saying there is a chance for a game on June 25th at the New Meadowlands against Santos.

While we wait for confirmation, The Borough Boys have already begun discussions to set up buses from midtown as well as a supporters section for any "inspirational" games. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Trans-Atlantic Cup

By: Stephen Brandt

This is going to be an interactive blog, in that I need your help. I was browsing the Borough Boys message board one night looking for stuff to post about, and came across this topic. Unfortunately, there aren’t any real sources for Cosmos game stats. (I hope I’m wrong on that). So here’s a great rundown of what happened in the 1981 Trans-Atlantic Cup.

There are sometimes when I do these blogs, that I find a topic and want to do more than a page, and then there’s some days that there are some subjects I just don’t have the greatest amount of information from. One such thing is the Trans Atlantic Cup in 1981. I would love, and be honored to update this blog at a later time if I get more information.  From my searches this is all I could find about the Cup, and it was from the Celtic fan posts around the net.
SUMMARY:

11/07/1981 Seattle Sounders 3-1 Southampton [in Seattle]
12/07/1981 New York Cosmos 2-0 Glasgow Celtic
15/07/1981 Seattle Sounders 2-1 Glasgow Celtic [in Seattle]
15/07/1981 New York Cosmos 2-1 Southampton
17/07/1981 New York Cosmos 3-3 Seattle Sounders [att: 40,000]
17/07/1981 Glasgow Celtic ` 2-1 Southampton

FINAL TABLE
1.Seattle Sounders 3 2-1-0 8- 5 5
2.New York Cosmos 3 2-1-0 7- 4 5
3.Glasgow Celtic 3 1-0-2 3- 5 2
4.Southampton 3 0-0-3 3- 7 0

Cosmos Academy East wins 3-2

The Cosmos Academy East beat South Central Premier Soccer 3-2 on a cold and windy day at Aviator Sports Complex.

17 year old David Diosa of Jackson Heights opened the scoring for the Cosmos and 18 Year old Moriken Sangary of the Bronx netted the second and third goals.

We are hoping to have more coverage of the Academy on this site as the season goes on.

MLS CUP 2010

Here are some of the Borough Boys' photos from MLS Cup. We had a few members in Toronto for the match and we had a small party at Jack Demseys that had about 50 people. The New York Cosmos also showed up and gave away some mini balls and t-shirts.

The Case of Bobby Smith

By: Stephen Brandt

IF you are going to build a team, what better thing to do, than get a direct order from your newly acquired superduper star Pele. Part of the conditions put on the Cosmos from the drawn out signing of Pele, was that the team had to sign good to great players around the great man. And rightfully so, wouldn’t you want talent if you were the greatest player in the world?

Such is the case of ex-Cosmos defender Bobby Smith. While not a World beater or Carlos Albeto, he was a very good American player, being capped for the national side 18 times before 1973-1980. Bobby Smith was born in Trenton New Jersey (ah so he was born to be a Cosmos), on March 28, 1951.

He was drafted out of Rider University in the second round in 1973 to the Philadelphia Atoms, who proceeded in their first year in the league run to the NASL championship game. Unfortunately for them they weren’t able to match that success. He was recognized as one of the top defenders in the league at the time, a perfect candidate for a New York Cosmos shirt. Also in 1975 he was the first native born US player to be named to the First Team All Star team.

That all set the stage for being sold with Bob Fury to the Cosmos for 100,000 dollars. He would spend three years with the Cosmos, win two more NASL titles, and be a second team All Star, in 1976. However, by his third year, the Warner Communications Jet was flying all over the place, bringing in the top players, so Smith lost his place, only playing nine games in his last season with the Cosmos.

Bob spent three more years in the league with: San Diego Sockers, Philadelphia Fury, and the Montreal Manic. In 1981, he retired to New Jersey. He currently owns a bar, and runs his own Soccer Academy. In 2007 he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Garber: Meeting with City, Wilpons and Cosmos

On todays "State of the League" conference call, Major League Soccer commisioner was asked about the Cosmos and he stated:

"Very focused on our 20th team in NYC. Meeting with the City, Wilpon family, Cosmos as well as other investors."

He once again enforced they are trying to get something done by 2013. We have every reason to believe that the Cosmos and Wilpons are working together, rather than against each other. Now its just getting the deal done with the city for a stadium.

Gordon Bradley – Player, Coach, Cosmos Legend

By: Stephen Brandt

Starting my teaching career as the Professor of Cosmos History, I could have gone many different ways. I could have told you guys about Steve Ross, Pele, or Shep Messing. But instead, I found one of their former coaches, Mr. Gordon Bradley. Not only did he coach the club to its first Soccer Bowl victory, but also played for the club.

TICC WELCOMES STEPHEN BRANDT

Why does a thirty one year old man from Buffalo New York who works for a college bookstore want to write about the NY Cosmos? It’s quite simple, they were the club which got this guy into the sport. Allbeit, a little late, but good things come to those who wait.  My name is Stephen Brandt, and I’m that guy.

I wasn’t born in enough time to witness the orignal Cosmos in person, or on television. As you all know, the growth of the internet and media has made pretty much anything that was filmed easily accesible.  The Once in a Lifetime Movie, is one of my favorite’s of all time. From that I abused the search function of Youtube for anything that was Cosmos related. And yes I still consider Pele the best player ever.

So what makes me a writer? Well I’ve blogged on many EPL teams to find my voice, and finally was able to settle on my first love for soccer, Liverpool FC. I have Danish blood in me, so any club who had Jan Molby on it was good. That and their fans are just nuts. Oh, Kenny Dalglish is my favorite non-this side of the globe player.

I have my own blog on Liverpool http://kingkennyskop.blogspot.com/.

However, I’m not here to write or talk about Liverpool. I’m a Cosmos Supporter too. Why I am starting to write right now on the team, is because my undergraduate degree is in history. There’s a lot people who will becoming supporters and will need a quick, and weekly reminder why the Cosmos were, are, and always will be the greatest NY club.

This is Cosmos Country welcomes Stephen and we look forward to history lessons.

IS 2013 REALISTIC FOR A NEW STADIUM?

Back in the Spring, the Cosmos shared with the Borough Boys that they planned to be playing soccer in their own stadium in MLS by 2013.  We were thrilled of course, but also a little skeptical.  Did they really think they could get a stadium up somewhere in NYC by the start of the 2013 season?

Now the Cosmos and the league have upped the ante.  They have gone public with the idea that an MLS team will be playing in NYC in 2013.  Though we certainly hope our skepticism is proven wrong, we have our doubts.

In New York City, you don’t just decide to build a stadium and start digging a foundation.  There are multiple levels of government approvals you’ve first got to go through.  It’s called the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure and is known by its acronym “ULURP”.
You start with a draft

Environmental Impact Statement that you submit along with the rest of your application to the Department of City Planning.  You haggle over the draft with the DCP until it certifies your application and then it goes on its long strange journey of approvals starting with the local Community Board to Borough President to Borough Board and the City Planning Commission.  If you get those approvals, your application is then sent to the City Council for a “yea” or “nay” vote and if approved, it goes to the Mayor for signature. If you want more information about ULURP, here’s a handy diagram: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/pdf/luproc/lur.pdf.  I must warn you, however, to make sure your head is securely fastened to the rest of your body, lest it fall off while trying to figure it out.

There’s a lot to do, but it does not necessarily have to blow up the 2013 idea.  ULURP is actually designed to take less than a year.  But the problem is that you don’t just first roll the idea out as the ULURP process begins.  There is a lot of hoeing to do before you can plant the stadium seeds.
The Community Boards are made up of 50 citizens appointed by elected officials.  The ULURP process is one of the only areas of real power they have.  And they don’t exercise it with a soft touch.  In our experience, they are by inclination against large scale development.  Community Boards are invested in the status quo of their neighborhoods.

If the plan is indeed on the Wilpon land, the application will have to go through Community Board 3, covering North Corona, East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights.  Mind you, this is a district with two major stadiums in it already; Citi field of course and Arthur Ashe stadium, home of the US Tennis Open.

If you think the neighborhood takes pride in these two world renowned facilities, you would be very wrong.  Leaders in the community, including elected officials, do not like Citi field or the USTA and the crowds their respective facilities bring without any demonstrable neighborhood benefits.  If the stadium was unveiled as a Wilpons project to the Community Board tomorrow, the thud of failure would be heard from here to North London.

There are further complications which we will just mention briefly.  There is the impending redevelopment of Willets Point, just across 126th Street from the Wilpon leased park land.  To glom a third stadium in addition to the crowds and traffic Willets Point will eventually bring will be a tough sell to the community.  Another complication is the additional exit ramps from the Van Wyck that a stadium would require.  This means not just government money, but approval from our State legislature, a fresh, new level of government which – though led by my beloved Democrats - might actually be the most dysfunctional in the United States.

All of this isn’t to say that it can’t be done.  It can be done.  The Borough Boys have talked at length with local elected officials and community leaders and they have told us they are willing to be supportive of a soccer stadium if, but only if, it accommodates community concerns and includes community benefits, of which there will be many.  We  are concerned that this stadium plan might have gotten off on the wrong foot.  The Wilpons only reached out to the key local government official after their interest hit the papers.  Faux pas right there!

But even if it can be done, can it be done by 2013?  Presumably, the major players in the project, the people who have invested money and time into it, have an interest in maintaining their reputations.  We can only assume that their stated beliefs to have a stadium ready for 2013 are based on a real concrete plan.  To be fair, they deserve our benefit of the doubt right now.  We can tell you however, that no Environmental Impact Statement has been submitted to the Department of City Planning, no attempts at outreach have been made to Community Board 3, and other than the one phone call mentioned before, no groundwork has been laid with local elected officials.

If there is a hope in hell to get a stadium built by the 2013 season, the time to get going on this is now!
The Borough Boys are in full support of this venture but as fans, it is also our job to be critical when there are questions to be raised. The Borough Boys are also here to help this venture as we all want the same thing, which is to be in a stadium in Queens in 2013 singing on the Cosmos.

*For the sake of full disclosure, the author is the lead of a development team who has submitted a Statement of Qualifications with the City’s Economic Development Corporation to build a soccer specific stadium at the Willets Point location.  Nevertheless, this is an honest assessment of the 2013 time-line that has been proposed by various stakeholders in the MLS2NYC project.

GIO TALKS FINANCES/STADIUM/ACADEMY

Here is a report where Gio Savarese talks about the Stadium and that the funding is in place not only for the stadium but for the league fee.

"We have the resources for the construction of a stadium. Also, the money needed to be accepted to Major League Soccer is now available."

Gio also talks about the development of the academy and discusses how they are playing a style of football they expect the first team to play and points to Barcelona style of play as "where we would like to get"

"The style of soccer we are talking about is about showmanship. The Cosmos was about showmanship in its prime and we want to continue that. A team that touches the ball. A team that gives off a vibe of happiness. The players in game can express themselves in this manner."

Great news that the funding seems to be completely in place and its exciting to actually be able to start thinking about a style of play from the Cosmos. HOWEVER, there is still one question supporters have is "Can a stadium really be built by 2013?" This is still a point of concern as most supporters want to see this team in its own stadium for the teams first kick in MLS!

6-8 MONTHS NOW

Don Garber was just speaking at halftime of the Major League Soccer playoff game between Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas and the topic of the Cosmos came up once again.

He speaks about the Cosmos ownership and the job they have done - some of his quotes

"We want to see a 20th team and we want to see that in New York"

"The Cosmos have relaunced that brand and have done a great job"

"Maybe its them, maybe its someone else, we hope to get something done in the next 6-8 months quite frankly"

He once again talks about needing a stadium but the time-line for getting something done has gone from 12 months to 6-8 now.

There are still a lot of questions the fans have but it seems like things are moving. Have to keep those fingers crossed that this works out!

Chinaglia back to the Cosmos

Press Release from the New York Cosmos.

October 26, 2010 (New York, NY) - The New York Cosmos today announced that Giorgio Chinaglia - four-time NASL champion and former striker for the world-renowned club - has signed on as its International Ambassador.

Chinaglia's role will comprise mainly of global appearances, speaking engagements and participation in key product initiatives. There will also be integration with his radio show "The Football Show" (Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 125, Weekdays 7-9am EST).

Chinaglia retired from The New York Cosmos in 1983 as the NASL's all-time leading scorer with 243 goals. In 2000, he was inducted into the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame.

"It is important for us to respect the heritage of The New York Cosmos and Giorgio has been a big part of the club’s history. We are honored to have a true legend endorse our vision during this exciting new era,” says Terry
Byrne, Director of Soccer, The New York Cosmos.

"It was over 30 years ago when I first came to this club. To see it come back for our loyal fans of the past, as well as for the next generation of fans, is very exciting to me. The New York Cosmos name resonates all over
the world and I look forward to being involved to bring back the excitement of American soccer," says Giorgio Chinaglia.

BYRNE - FINANCING FOR STADIUM IS IN PLACE

Another exciting development today, which can be found at Northjersey.com is that Terry Byrne, Director of Soccer for the New York Cosmos, says that financing for a stadium is in place.

The story also talks of the Wilpons being another candidate to land the team but we at Thisiscosmoscountry.com have stated before that the groups are working together. Not against each other.

Here are some quotes from the article:

"Ultimately, the process will take as long as necessary to get an agreement to build a soccer-specific stadium. MLS officials are known to favor Queens as the franchise’s home, and it would make sense to build something in the Willets Point area, close to Citi Field. Cosmos director of soccer Terry Byrne said the club has the financing in place to build a stadium."

"
"Our intent is to be the 20th team in MLS," Byrne said. "We’ve had several meetings with Mr. Garber and progressed very positively."
"

Click here for the whole story at www.northjersey.com

There are a lot of people against a second New York City club and want to see a team elsewhere, but lets face facts all. If the financing is in place for a stadium, its all a formality now.

GOAL.COM INTERVIEW WITH RICK PARRY

Goal.com has done an exclusive with Rick Parry, the non executive board member of the New York Cosmos. Seems that Rick is very happy with the commitment to the youth development that the Cosmos have shown.

“The development of young players is dear to my heart,” he said. “The strong commitment that The New York Cosmos have made to invest in youth development played a big factor in my decision.”

Parry also talks about how crucial the development will be if the team does get granted the 20th MLS franchise.

ONCE AGAIN - NYC 12 MONTHS AWAY?

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber once again said NYC is the focus for the 20th expansion spot and again says it could be a done deal within the next 12 months!

“Our focus on the 20th expansion team is going in full swing," Garber said. "We’re having discussions with a number of different ownerships groups in New York and hope to continue to make progress in those discussions. We’d like that team to be in the NY metro area. … We hope in the next 12 months to finalize that.”

Keeps looking better and better!

Cosmos in contract with Umbro

The Cosmos brand makes the cover of one of England's top Soccer magazines, four four two. They will be marketing kits and other paraphernalia under a contract with Umbro. This of course begs the question "what about the exclusive Adidas contract with MLS?"

Nevertheless, we wouldn't expect that shirt deals would be the difference between the Cosmos becoming the NYC MLS team or not. Time will tell.

The UK edition of the magazine will be on sale October 4th, and available in the US sometime in November. The jerseys will be available in December for $75

COSMOS ACADEMY PLAYERS INVITED TO U-17 PROGRAM

The U.S. Under 17 Men's National Team Residencey Program roster was set for the fall 2010 semester and on the list of 40 players were three from the Cosmos Academy.

Midfielders Esteban Rodriguez and Marco Delgado from Cosmos Academy West in California and Forward Alex Muyl from Cosmos Academy East in New York will participate in the full-time residency program in Bradenton, FLA which includes training under Coach Cabrera as well as classes at a nearby school.

Good luck to the Cosmos boys as they hopefully make enough of an impression to get called to next years CONCACAF U-17 championship.

Terry Byrne on a NY Derby

There is a lot of questions about Terry Byrne and his role with the New York Cosmos. Byrne, who is most notably known for being David Beckham's personal assistant is listed as "Director of Soccer" according to the Cosmos home page. There are those that speculate that Byrne is keeping a seat warm for David Beckham.

However, Byrne recently spoke with spoke with CNN about a potential derby match in NYC

"Rivalry within sport is a good thing and I believe the MLS would welcome one in New York," Byrne told CNN. "The League has it in Los Angeles where you have Galaxy and Chivas sharing their stadium and city and the games between those two teams always create a fantastic atmosphere and a healthy rivalry."

The story goes on later to say

"Byrne, however, believes the introduction of the New York Cosmos into the MLS could help conjure exactly that kind of local friction. "The Red Bulls have done a fantastic job within their new stadium out in New Jersey and we believe the City of New York would welcome a similar stadia and team within its city," he says, highlighting the fact that the Red Bulls would be out-of-towners compared to his Cosmos who plan to locate in the heart of the city. And with that, the one-upmanship -- the essential fuel for a local derby -- has only just begun..."

There really is nothing to this but it is good to see the Cosmos still in the news.

I dont think anyone can disagree with how great a "Hudson River Derby" would be. It has been something the Borough Boys and its followers have been dreaming about since day 1.

There are still a lot of questions surrounding the Cosmos' rebirth and none more important than "who is funding this?"

Garber "short window to get something done"

Yesterday on MLS EXTRA TIME RADIO, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber once again talked about NYC expansion and while most of his statements were more of the same, he did state that the window to get something done is small.

Clearly this quote raises some questions as in the past Don Garber has hinted that there is no rush to get things done and yet now there is a "short window"?

The positive spin on this latest quote is that you have to imagine that something would get done sooner rather than later, but one has to wonder if there is a deadline before the league looks at other options for the 20th team.

One bit of speculation that was put to bed in this interview is that any new NYC team WOULD NOT ground share with the New York Red Bulls. The commissioner stated that if New York City happened it would be in a new stadium, hopefully in Queens.

25 August 2010

Cosmos Academy West and GIO

After announcing a partnership with BW Gottschee earlier this month, it seems the Cosmos are showing Tupac a little love taking their show to the west coast as well.

"LAFC, based out of Pasadena, is one of the nation¹s most esteemed and competitive youth soccer organizations and will now be called Cosmos Academy (West), based out of Pomona"

To see the Cosmos build this show from the youth level up is something Cosmos fans and US soccer fans can be happy with. This is showing their commitment not only to the brand New York Cosmos but also to soccer as well.

They also announced that today local icon Giovanni Savarese will be the Director of Cosmos Academy East.

"As the newly hired Director of Cosmos Academy (East), he joins The New York Cosmos’ mission to further solidify their mark in the regional, national and international soccer scene"

Good to see a local legend getting involved still and we wish Gio luck in his new role!

NY1 Garber Interview

Take a look at this interview and you will notice lots of the same talk we have been hearing but it should be noted that once again Garber talks about both the Cosmos as well as the Wilpons. We have heard through very credible sources that these two groups have met about this venture.

It seems final that Queens is the location of this team, just a matter of Long Island City or by Citi Field.

The report says that the 20th team would be the final expansion team in the near future, however he gives us a timeline of anywhere between 2013 and 2015 for kick off. Lets hope for the earlier.

Thank You Jack Demsey's

If you have been to Jack Demseys for any of the Borough Boys events you know how great the atmosphere can be. This is all in part ot the fantastic ownership and managment of the establishment.

This banner was hung during the tailgate party of the USA vs. Brazil game and The Borough Boys and the American Outlaws NYC chapter can not thank the staff enough for all their hard work during our outings.

Cheer Jack Demsey's, this is just the start of something beautiful!

More Garber NY2 Quotes

The interesting thing here is Garber talking about how much he is a fan of Paul Kemsley.

"I speak to Paul Kelsmely all the time," Garber said at the Red Bulls press conference that introduced Mexican international captain Rafa Marquez to the area media. "From the months that he bought the trademark to obviously the activities this weekend. Whether or not they are engaged is still way, way too far [too early] to make a prediction. I'm a big fan of Paul. I know all his partners very well. I think its great to have the Cosmos in whatever [incarnation] it comes back relaunched because I think it's been the heart and soul of the soccer community here."

And then Don Garber drops this line:

"It's hard to imagine that we can't get it done."

Taking the quotes from this article you get the feeling that this is just a matter of time but you have to be cautions as anything can happen and finalizing a stadium deal is going to be the toughest part.

As for the Wilpons/Cosmos thing....they are talking, we know that as fact.

THE COSMOS ARE BACK

Today during the Copa NYC Final, Pele announced that "The New York Cosmos are back". What does this mean? Well according to their website it seems the Cosmos are going to be active on all levels of soccer in this country. At the youth level, they've partnered with BW Gottschee, a Queens based youth club. The most exciting part for all of The Borough Boys is this quote from their website.

"However, the club’s ultimate vision is unquestionably to bring The New York Cosmos back to the greatest city in the world, to be a part of Major League Soccer and to compete for the championship."

Something done in the next 12 months?

This quote comes from SI.com.

"Garber: If we could write the book, the next chapter would be a second team in New York. We're working hard to achieve that. We've been spending time talking to potential investors, doing a lot of planning to figure out how to make the economics work. The Red Bulls have been very supportive of having a hometown rival. I hope our 20th team is in New York City. We've got a lot of work to do to achieve that.

SI.com: Would it be in Brooklyn, Queens or somewhere else?

Garber: We're looking at a number of different sites, sites in Queens for the most part, and not just at Shea but Long Island City and Flushing Meadow Park. So we have three particular sites we're looking at. But we have a lot of work to do to get something done. It's a very difficult market, very crowded.

SI.com: What year would you be hoping to start that team?

Garber: It certainly wouldn't be any earlier than 2013, and we're racing up against a deadline to get it done by '13. In order to get it done by 2013 we've got to get something done in the next 12 months."

So, with that being said - we now see they are "racing" against a deadline. Can we see something done in the next 12 months?

Long Island City? We hear at This is Cosmos Coutnry feel its going to be next to Citi Field.

So can at this time this summer we be speaking about signings and potential coaches?

Keep me crossed everyone!

C'mon - Give us something new!

While it is always good to see that the league wants another team in New York City we would like to see a bit more information from any of the parties involved.

"We are very focused on trying to have that 20th team in New York - a second team in New York, a rival for the Red Bulls," he said in an interview Tuesday.

"We have got a lot of work to do to achieve that. We may or may not achieve that but that is our goal and our main focus for the 20th team. That would be pretty cool," he said, confirming any new team would be in New York City proper.

This is the quote from the linked Vancouver Sun article and with the Major League Soccer All-Star game tomorrow, we were hoping for a bit more substance. However, the continued mention of NYC being their main goal for 20 is still promising and we can all rest assured that there is indeed movement behind the scenes.

Garber: "20 we hope to be in New York"

If you listen to this podcast where they interview MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Expansion comes up at about the 6:30 mark. Here are some of the quotes from Don Garber:

"Very focused on a 20th team, we hope that that team can be in the New York Area"

"We would like to have a rival for our Red Bulls"

When speaking about the Southeast he says "At some point"

and finally he says it again "20 we hope to be in New York"

Strong words by Mr. Garber!

PK says December Launch?

According to this report, Paul Kemsley speaks of the Cosmos and a potential launch date.

"Mr. Kemsley, in a brief telephone interview last week, declined to comment on the lawsuit but touted a new project—reviving the New York Cosmos soccer team.

"We are going to launch in, probably, December," he said, adding that the project "includes apparel, grass-roots soccer camps for youth, an inspirational traveling team and, eventually, a fully competitive side.""

Tease!

While we are all in World Cup mode, a few Cosmos things have caught our eyes:

First is this picture of a Cosmos Ball that mysteriously found its way on the Borough Boys Message boards. Not sure exactly what park this is but that ball is clearly a new Cosmos ball.

Secondly is this picture taken by one of our members in downtown Manhattan. It is a picture of a New York Cosmos logo posted on a lamp post. It should be noted that the new headquarters of the Cosmos is located in that area as well.

While this is not much, its good to see the owners of the Cosmos like to tease their fans a bit!

Coincidence?

If you have been following The Borough Boys movement from day 1, you will probably have a laugh at this picture as well! This was in today's New York Daily News in their "Bramhall's World for June 2010" section. There will be those that take this picture and think this is just a coincidence and then there are those that will say this means something deeper.

Recently, there has been mention of the Wilpons possibly reopening talks with Major League Soccer about a possible stadium and team in Queens and while there is no evidence to suggest that this is a reflection on those talks one can see the irony as it is published just one month later.

Most will say this is just an artist's portrayal of the growing interest in soccer around the city. However, if you are one who thinks there is a deeper message about a possible MLS team, just hope that the tequila shots were flowing.

USA vs. England viewing recap

Thank you for all that came down and made 33rd Street a great place to be for USA soccer fans!

The American Outlaws NYC and Borough Boys together filled up Jack Demseys to capacity and spilled over into Legends, which is owned by the same people as Jack Demseys. Both floors of Legends were packed with USA supporters as well!

After the game, over 100 USA fans took to 33rd street making cars honk their horns in celebration of the result. Below is a photo of the upstairs lounge about an hour and a half before the match.
